A sun-loving, alpine type of Bleeding Heart. Not a woodland plant, this Bleeding Heart is from high elevations in cooler climates. With earlier and vigorous flower production, magenta-red, heart-shaped flowers cluster atop slender stems above frosty-blue foliage. Its mounding, bushy habit of intricately cut foliage resembles Artemisia. This variety does not produce seed which promotes longer blooming into the summer. Dicentra Fire Island is a cross of the Japanese native, D. peregrina and the North American native, D. eximia. From plant breeder, Aikra Shiozaki.

Dicentra General Information

Dicentra are classics in the perennial border. A pleasing groundcover, D. eximia can tolerate more sun than traditional Bleeding Hearts, but consistent moisture will ensure a long bloom period. D. Fire Island does not produce seed allowing it to bloom longer into the summer. Spring shipping only. Idaho has restricted all potted plant material from being shipped into Idaho at this time.

Dicentra Plant Care

Dicentra 'Fire Island' is different from the other bleeding hearts as it is not a woodland plant. Its native habitat is from high elevations in cool climates and it can grow in full sun, much like an alpine. It does not not grow well in heavy clay soils and does not need deep, moist soils like most Dicentras. Give this one more sun than you would typically give a Dicentra and you will be rewarded with stronger growth and more flowers.

Plantable Pots
