Cheerful Winter Color
The golden yellow stems of the Cornus Arctic Fire Yellow ornamental shrub will bring winter cheer to your garden and indoor arrangements. With white flowers in late spring-early summer, this North American native looks attractive planted alone or grouped with evergreens. In fall, the birds will snack on the berries. Shade, salt, and erosion tolerant, it is durable and well suited for a rain garden, cottage garden, slope, stream bank, or boggy area. The best yellow color is produced on one and two year-old stems. Older brown stems can be pruned in early spring.

Cornus General Information

Cornus are best known for providing striking winter beauty to the garden. The bare stems provide colorful interest and are excellent for holiday arrangements. In spring, Cornus sports small but charming white flowers and has attractive foliage all growing season long. Good shrub for colder zones (3 & 4). Idaho has restricted all potted plant material from being shipped into Idaho at this time.

Cornus Plant Care

Pruning has options: Can be pruned back hard every year or two in spring to within a couple inches of the ground to force numerous new and hence reddest winter stems. Alternately, a less drastic approach is to prune out up to a third of the older stems in spring, removing stems the size of your thumb and larger. If flowers and berries are desired; this is the preferred method, as Redtwigs bloom on the previous season's wood and the first method of hard annual pruning will not allow flowering. Average to moist soil is preferred. Stems color best when young (hence the pruning) and in sun. Do not prune until established - usually the third year.

Plantable Pots

Our plants are grown in 3.5x3.5x4” plantable pots. Made from 100% biodegradable coconut husk fibers (coir), these pots have tremendous advantages over plastic pots. With better air exchange, this "breathable" pot fosters robust root growth and reduces transplant shock since you can plant the pots directly in the ground. The pot naturally becomes part of the soil on its own over time—no composting required—and since they're made from a renewable resource that requires very little energy, they're earth-friendly too!
