Dahlia General Information
Dahlias are annual bulbs and tubers available in a variety of forms and colors from smaller starburst blossoms to plate-size flowers. Gardeners adore their easy-growing disposition and the flowers are favorites for cut flower arrangements. Their bursts of colorful flowers provide months of summertime color. Dahlias will only last one year (except in zones 8-10) but can be lifted and stored over the winter in colder zones. Here are Instructions for doing that. Dahlia Plant Care
Dahlia flowers are generated from tubers which prefer well-drained loamy soil that does not stay soggy. To prepare soil, dig down 8-12 inches and add compost to planting hole. Lay the tuber sprout-side up 3 inches deep and cover with soil. Water sparingly until first sprouts are produced then increase to 2-3 times per week. Do not let them dry out for long periods. Dahlias will return next year in zones 8-10, but tubers can be lifted, overwintered, and replanted in zones 3-7 by following these Instructions. Dahlias can be started indoors four to six weeks before the frost free outdoor planting date if desired, then transferred outside when danger of frost has subsided.
