Dahlia General Information

Dahlias are available in a variety of forms and colors from little starburst blossoms to large decorative-sized flowers. Gardeners adore their easy-growing disposition and the flowers are favorites for cut flower arrangements. Their bursts of colorful flowers provide months of summertime color. All our accent annuals are guaranteed to reach you in good condition and to grow, but we can't guarantee annuals to overwinter. Will be an annual except in zones 8-10 but can be stored over the winter in colder zones. Instructions

Dahlia Plant Care

Hardy in zones 8-10. Dahlias are best started indoors four to six weeks before the desired outdoor planting date. Transfer outside when danger of frost has subsided. Dahlia flowers are generated from tubers which prefer well-drained, acidic loam soil. They will grow relatively well in any soil that isn’t soggy. To prepare soil, dig down 8-12 inches and add compost to planting hole. Lay the tuber sprout-side up 3 inches deep and cover soil. Water sparingly until first sprouts are produced then increase to 2-3 times per week. Do not let them dry out. Lift tubers in the fall in zones 3-7. Brush off excess dirt and lay them in a dry, but shady, location for a few days. Store in a cool, dry, frost-free location over winter. Replant the following spring after the last frost.
