Three Season Groundcover
This resilient dwarf shrub is a marvelous solution for anywhere mowing is challenging or awkward. The dense mat of glossy foliage makes a superb groundcover and does away with the need for weeding or mulching. Native to North America, Aronia Ground Hug gives a three season show with white flowers in the spring, dark purple berries in the summer, and red-orange foliage in the fall. Aronia is salt and drought tolerant making it useful for erosion control, as well as in mass plantings, in a rain garden, at a pond’s edge, or in a woodland garden. Birds enjoy the berries, and deer may eat the flower buds in early spring if food supplies are scarce. Blooms on old wood and best fruit in full sun. 2019 Far West Show, Award of Merit

Aronia General Information

Aronia Ground Hug® was developed by Dr. Mark Brand at the University of Connecticut. Aronia is often called by the common name "chokeberry" because its fruits, while edible, are very astringent. Birds love to feast on the berries and will quickly devour all that remain on this lovely shrub. Idaho has restricted all potted plant material from being shipped into Idaho at this time.

Aronia Plant Care

Very low maintenance. If desired, but not necessary, prune to shape after flowering. Prefers a sunny spot with well-drained soil. While it can tolerate clay soil, it is suggested that the soil be amended with organic matter like compost to improve its texture and drainage.
